        My composition for wind ensemble uses the setting of "Wondrous Love" from the Sacred Harp collection. The music was a commission celebrating the inauguration of the current president of the University of Rochester, and I wrote it for wind ensemble. The music is partly based upon "Wondrous Love," and the whole piece is meant to be reflective of that particularly American spirit I have found in shape note music from the 19th-century collections.
        My own knowledge of this music goes back to my student days in the the early '70's, and it was then, in fact, that I heard tunes like "Wondrous Love."
