MIDWESTERN VISIONS OF IMPRESSIONISM

I am very sorry that the information I quoted was apparently inaccurate. Frieseke is not listed among the artists exhibited in this show.

FREDERICK CARL FRIESEKE: THE EVOLUTION OF AN AMERICAN IMPRESSIONIST The sumptuous hardback catalogue may be found in major book stores. If you don't see one at your local store, please order it there; alternatively, you may purchase it on line.

A major & magnificent retrospective exhibition of Frieseke works opened at the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah, Georgia, March 20 - June 3, 2001. I was privileged to attend both the "Black Tie Opening" and the members-only lecture by my brother Nick, who deserves a medal for his outstanding performance two days after he had his appendix removed! I'll put up a rave review and pictures as soon as I can.
"The largest and most comprehensive traveling exhibition ever to be organized by the Telfair Museum of Art," it traveled to The Dixon Gallery and Gardens, Memphis (June 24- Aug 19 2001). Nick Kilmer gave a lecture for the official opening on June 24th. My husband Tim and I were able to enjoy that together. The aesthetically delightful suitablility of this more intimate space for the Frieseke paintings compensated for the lack of some of the splendid paintings from the Telfair show that were not available in Memphis.
The exhibition traveled to the San Diego Museum of Art (September 8 - November 11, 2001). From there it proceeded to the Terra Museum of American Art, Chicago, (Dec. 1, 2001 - February 3, 2002). The catalogue for this show "promises to be a critically important publication, both for the understanding of Frieseke and as a significant addition to American Impressionist literature." - Tania Sammons (formerly of the Telfair Museum of Art)FRIESEKE CHAMBER EXHIBIT The Shiawassee Arts Center in Owosso, Michigan, birthplace of F. C. FriesekeA Catalogue Raisonné of Frieseke's works is in preparation.
January 27, 2001 to February 11, 2001
Selections from the recent Frieseke exhibit at Hollis Taggart Galleries in New York.
The Shiawassee Arts Center web site presents an impressive array of images - seventy Frieseke paintings from various sources. The images of "Breton Costume, "Normandy Girl," "Mesnil Landscape," and "Under the Trees" are taken from my site, with permission.
Chamber Works by Frederick C Frieseke, a beautiful hardcover book with many full-color illustrations, has been produced. It served as a catalogue for the show at Hollis Taggart Galleries, November 28, 2000 - Jan 13, 2001. There are many images on their site; please be patient while they download.
Uneventful Reminiscences: a Childhood in Florida ran concurrently with Chamber Works by Frederick C Frieseke at Hollis Taggart Galleries, November 28, 2000 - Jan 13, 2001 in New York.
Uneventful Reminiscences: a Childhood in Florida, a charming full-color hardcover book, has been produced in a format matching Chamber Works. It served as a catalogue for the show.

Elizabeth "Betty" B. Gardner is a docent at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco; she informed me that there were two Frederick Frieseke's on long-term loan from an anonymous donor, one of which is "Lady Seated In a Park".
Betty Gardner is the author of Opportunities in Arts and Crafts Careers, which may be purchased through Rising Dove Bookstore.
Dakin Hart, Assistant to the Director at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco told me that there was a single work by F. C. Frieseke on view at the de Young Museum in Gallery 48.

"Impressionist works from all consignors were the strongest sellers. The top lot, "In the Garden, Giverny" by Frederick Frieseke (est. $300,000/400,000), brought a record $1.02 million, attracting bids from Vance Jordan and Michael Altman before selling on the phone to an unknown collector...."The Open Window" by Frieseke sold at auction in 1987 for $825,000 and was purchased (presumably for more) by the Agleys in 1989. Here, estimated at $500,000/750,000, it sold to Berry-Hill Galleries for $635,000."
A Place in Normandy, by Nicholas Kilmer, is a delightful and often hilarious book about the house in Normandy where F. C. Frieseke lived with his wife and daughter. Written by my brother Nick, it was favorably reviewed in The Smithsonian Magazine. I have several used hardbacks for sale at Rising Dove Bookstore.

Frederick Carl Frieseke: American painter
Note that Frieseke was not Whistler's nephew.
Henry Ossawa Tanner was a companion painter of Frieseke's.
Frieseke often stated that the artist who influenced him most was Pierre Auguste Renoir
I was working on a Bibliography for F. C. Frieseke based largely on the information at askart.com. If I ever have time to get back to it, it will include ISBN numbers and links to on-line resources for purchasing the books. Please Email customer service if you would like to be notified when my bibliography is on line with links for purchasing the books. Please don't hold your breath; I have a lot of projects going - and please do let me know if your email address changes!
meanwhile, see my brother Nicholas Kilmer' Bibliography at artnet: Selected Articles, Selected Catalogs, and Selected Books. I will look over what he has - some day - and see if I have anything to add.
