Beautiful illustrations; verse retelling of the legend, with Chinese translation. Recommended for reading aloud to young children.

Fa Mulan: The Story of a Woman Warrior ; Robert D. San Souci, Jean Tseng & Mou-Sien Tseng (Illustrators).   Hardcover   ***
Good illustrations; a robust Mulan makes the disguise more believable. San Souci retells the legend, reading between the lines, but not contradicting the basic story.

The Song of Mu Lan ; Jeanne M. Lee.   Hardcover   **
This close translation of the Chinese folk song from an ancient Chinese text is gloriously illustrated by the translator. Her father, Chan Bo Wan, reproduced versions from the Sung and Ming dynasties in calligraphy for the endpapers. If I could have only one Mulan, this is the one I would choose.
