Tim and I both seem to enjoy a combination of good writing, excellent research, character development, and exciting plots. I got Tim hooked on the Anne Perry mysteries when we first started dating in 1993. She writes two novel series, both set in Victorian times (one early, one late): the Thomas and Charlotte Pitt books and the William Monk and Hester Latterly books.
Anne Perry's meticulous historical research makes them fascinating. She gets into politics, feminism, social commentary, sexual mores, fashion, and so on.
Each of the novels within a series builds on the one that was published before it; if you read them out of order, you will spoil some of the surprises. Begin with The Cater Street Hangman. Her central characters are lovable, admirable, fascinating, and exasperating. They grow and change convincingly.

Tim has long been a fan of Tony Hillerman's Navajo Tribal Police novels and of Patrick O'Brian's series about the adventures of Captain Jack Aubrey and ship's surgeon Stephen Maturin. O'Brian recounts their adventures aboard a British man-of-war during the Napoeonic wars. At a recent party, Tim choose O'Brien's series as his "favorite book."
